Rotator Cuff Injuries

About Your Rotator Cuff

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and several tendons that surround the shoulder joint. The four muscles comprising the rotator cuff are the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. These muscles and tendons work in harmony to keep your shoulder joints in position while allowing for shoulder and arm mobility.

Rotator Cuff Injury or Disease

Many instances of shoulder pain are generated by rotator cuff injuries or diseases. These issues are regularly a result of trauma or calcific tendonitis. A common cause of a traumatic muscular tear of the rotator cuff is falling onto the associated arm or shoulder. Calcific tendonitis may be caused or aggravated by overuse of the shoulder. This type of rotator cuff disease is often caused by a constant, repetitive movement such as those used during a specific sport or work task.

The following symptoms can point to a rotator cuff tear, especially if your rotator cuff has experienced trauma or overuse:

  • Severe shoulder pain, especially if you are laying on the affected shoulder
  • Pain while lowering or lifting your arm in certain ways
  • Arm or shoulder weakness when tring to rotate your arm
  • Feeling a “cracking” sensation when moving your shoulder
